Music Review: Irish Stout 100% Proof by The Grafton Street Buskers

Irish Stout 100% Proof by The Grafton Street BuskersIrish Stout 100% Proof by The Grafton Street Buskers

This is a one-off music review; I was offered the chance to review Irish Stout - 100% Proof by The Grafton Street Buskers as part of a St. Patrick's Day celebration.

I have a fair number of Irish relatives on my Mum's side of the family. Unfortunately, we only really get together at funerals. I've been to a number of funerals, but it's only when my Irish family are around can I say that it's actually a really joyfull day, full of smiles and laughter - and this is when it comes to the wake. Of course, I never like it when anyone dies, but I love how the Irish - or at least my Irish relatives - hold a wake, which includes a good sing song. They're the only people I know who can sing - without music - without the slightest hint of embarrassment or worry about their voice. And it's always so beautiful.

So when Chess is ordered by an infamous crime boss – who also happens to be her drug dealer – to use her powers as a witch to solve a grisly murder involving dark magic, she is unsurprised; she knew the recent calm wouldn’t last. As if that wasn’t bad enough, Chess’ ex lover Lex, son of a rival crime lord, is trying to re-ignite the sparks between them.

Plus there’s the little matter of Chess’ real job as a ghost hunter for the Church of Real Truth; investigating reports of a haunting at a school in the heart of Downside. As Chess is drawn into a shadowy world of twisted secrets and dark violence, it soon becomes clear that she’s not going to emerge from its depths without making the ultimate sacrifice.

Sounds amazing, right?! Unfortunately for us here in the UK, we have to wait until May. But we can tease ourselves with all the wonderful reviews being posted by our American friends and get all excited!

Yes, the cover above is the UK cover. Similar-ish to the US in that the same model is used. I like it, but I did really like the old UK covers, they were so different! Ah well.

So wonderful Americans, get pre-ordering!

Weekly Gossip: Part 2 - Other News

Here is all the bookish news from the past week. Bear with me, it's a long one!

Authors of award winning Spanish novel, La Estrella - translated as The Star - Javi Araguz and Isabel Hierro, want to make their book available for English readers. To help try and push this, they have had their website, the trailer (see below), the first chapter and a post on the making of the cover translated into English. Their hope is that if people like what they see, they will then add their name to a list to request the book be translated into English.

Weekly Gossip: Part 1 - Cover Reveals

There is a huge amount of news to share with you this week! So much so, I've had to separate it into two posts. Here is your first, the cover reveals!

Stripes Publishing have released the cover for Geekhood: Close Encounter of the Girl Kind by debut author Andy Robb.

Geekhood: Close Encounter of the Girl Kind by Andy RobbGeekhood: Close Encounter of the Girl Kind by Andy Robb (released 4th June 2012) - If you haven't worked it out yet, girls don't do this. They don't come to the Hovel. They don't like goblins and dragons. They don't paint miniatures. They don't play role playing games or re-enact fictional battles. And they don't talk to Geeks like me especially if they're pretty. And this girl is pretty.

What do you do if you're a fourteen-year-old Geek, and a Beautiful Girl has appeared in the midst of your geeky world? And she seems to like you... For Archie, the natural reaction would be to duck and cover ... run for the hills ... buy a new model elf... Anything but risk stepping into the Real World. But even Geeks have to put their heads above the parapet at some point. With his mum barely able to contain her excitement that her son is about to join the human race, and his step-father, Tony the Tosser, offering crass advice, it's time for Archie to embark on a daring Quest to win the Beautiful Girl's heart and shake off his Geekhood for good...

Review: The First Day of the Rest of Your Life by Rachel Caine

Morganville vampires reading challenge 2012The First Day of the Rest of Your Life by Rachel Caine - Eve Rosser is turning eighteen. Does she accept the Protection or go without? From Goodreads

This short story was originally published in Many Bloody Returns, but it also available to read on Rachel Caine's website.

The First Day of the Rest of Your Life is a prequel short story to Glass Houses. It covers the day that Eve moves in to the Glass House. It's Eve's 18th Birthday and she's celebrating. Only she lives in Morganville, and things don't always go to plan. Bad things happen, choices need to be made, and Eve's life is about to change.

This short story was just awesome! It's great insight into the events that lead to the first room mate moving into the Glass House, one of the first steps that lead to the jumbled little group of teens that we meet in the first book. We also get to meet Eve's parents, who are right in the lead in the running for Worst Parents in Morganville Ever Award. We also get to see Miranda, why Eve is any kind of friend of hers, and why she's likely to believe her in the future.

Its a great little story, shining a light of a few things that just add a little more to the Morganville story, and help you understand things a little more. It's a great story, and I'm looking forward to reading the others!

Review: Unearthly by Cynthia Hand

Unearthly by Cynthia HandUnearthly by Cynthia Hand (review copy) - In the beginning, there's a boy standing in the trees. I take a step toward him, open my mouth to call his name, only I don't know it. Then he starts to turn. That's when the vision leaves me. I blink, and it's gone.

Clara is part-angel. Through terrifying visions of a forest fire she is shown her purpose: to savea beautiful, unknown boy. When she finds Christian, the boy from her visions, he's everything she could wish for. But Clara discovers there's a darker side to her purpose. And if Christian is so perfect, why does she have feelings for someone else?

A mesmerising story of destiny, supernatural powers, forbidden romance and an impossisble choice.

Blog Tour: Falling Fast by Sophie McKenzie

Today I have the honour of having Sophie McKenzie guest posting on my blog for her Falling Fast Blog Tour. Read on to find out what Sophie's favourite Contemporary Romances are. All links go to Goodreads.

Sophie McKenzieMy Favourite Contemporary Romances

Blood Red Road by Moira Young is a dystopian adventure story with a powerful romance at its centre. For me, the best scenes in the story are those featuring main character Saba and the man who helps – and infuriates – her, Jack. I should admit that I know Moira and had a chance to read much of this book before it was published but as soon as Jack arrived on the page I forgot all that and was totally swept up in the love story.

Discussion: Technology and Accessibility of Books

It wasn't too long ago that all books were published in print. I'm not talking extra goodies from authors - which would be found of their websites - but books published by a publisher. There would be physical books. You could go to a shop and buy, or go to the library and borrow. They were available to everyone who wanted them.

Then techology advances and eReaders were invented. And then it was you can go to a shop and buy, go to a library and borrow, or press a few buttons on an online book store and you will instantly have your new story on your eReader! Great stuff! Right?

Review: Pandemonium by Lauren Oliver

Pandemonium by Lauren OliverPandemonium by Lauren Oliver (ARC) - WARNING! I cannot review this book without spoiling the others in the series. Read no further if you're planning on reading this series and don't want it spoiled for you.

Love, the deadliest of all deadly things.
It kills you when you have it.
And when you don't.

I'm pushing aside the memory of my nightmare,
pushing aside thoughts of Alex,
pushing aside thoughts of Hana and my old school,
push,
push,
push,
like Raven taught me to do.
The old life is dead.
But the old Lena is dead too.
I buried her.
I left her beyond a fence,
behind a wall of smoke and flame.

Pandemonium is a poignant, explosive, recklessly romantic and utterly heartbreaking novel. Like Delirium, the first in the compelling trilogy, it will take you to the very edge. That's all you need to know. We'll let Lena do the rest of the talking...

Mary Pauline Lowry Guest Post: I've Been Accused of Writing Smut

Today, I have the pleasure of having Mary Pauline Lowry, debut YA author of The Earthquake Machine, guest post on my blog! More about Mary and her book at the end of the post.

mary pauline lowryI’VE BEEN ACCUSED OF WRITING SMUT
Thoughts on Sex and the Coming-of-Age Novel

I was a little taken aback when I received my first email from a reviewer who wrote that while my novel THE EARTHQUAKE MACHINE is “well-written,” it’s also worse than “smut” and entirely inappropriate for teen readers because of its sexually explicit content.
