Top Ten LGBTQ YA Books I Can't Believe I Haven't Read

Top Ten Tuesday

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme run by The Broke and the Bookish. This week’s topic is Top Ten Books I Can't Believe I Haven't/Want To Read From X Genre, and I've chosen LGBTQ YA novels I haven't read.

I Am J by Cris Beam Where You Are by J. H. Trumble

Just Between Us by J. H. Trumble Ask the Passengers by A. S. King Kissing Kate by Lauren Myracle Hushed by Kelley York

Almost Perfect by Brian Katcher Parrotfish by Ellen Wittlinger A Love Story Starring My Dead Best Friend by Emily Horner The Difference Between You and Me by Madeleine George

1. I Am J by Cris Beam
2. Where You Are by J. H. Trumble
3. Just Between Us by J. H. Trumble
4. Ask the Passengers by A. S. King
5. Kissing Kate by Lauren Myracle
6. Hushed by Kelley York
7. Almost Perfect by Brian Katcher
8. Parrotfish by Ellen Wittlinger
9. A Love Story Starring My Dead Best Friend by Emily Horner
10. The Difference Between You and Me by Madeleine George

All bar the books by J. H. Trumble came up either as recommendations or on lists when I was researching two years ago for LGBTQ YA Month. Apart from the books by Trumble - which I am SO EAGER to read, because Don't Let Me Go was so awesome - I'm no longer completely sure about. I have a feeling that better LGBTQ YA has been released since? What do you think, has anyone read any of these? Would you recommend them?

  1. I recently read Ask the Passengers and really loved it. I'd still recommend it. And I really loved A Love Story Starring My Dead Best Friend but it's been a long time since I read it and I'm not sure how it compares to more recent offerings...

    1. That's good to hear! Perhaps I will pick them up. HAving glanced quickly at Cynthia's comment below (though I've not yet read it in depth), maybe I'll borrow them rather than buy. Thanks, Michelle!

  2. I actually differ from Michelle above by saying that I didn't like either Ask the Passengers or A Love Story Starring My Dead Best Friend, haha. I thought the latter one especially was just... really bland. I did read it a long time ago though. Ask the Passengers on the other hand is the kind of book that I can see why other people would like. It just wasn't for me.

Apart from those two I haven't read any of the other ones, but as you know I am also dying to read more Trumble! I once flicked through Kissing Kate in a bookshop but I didn't like it enough to buy it, I think.

I do think that better LGBTQ YA has probably been released since most of these books! The landscape of LGBTQ YA has honestly changed so much over the past few years, haha.

    1. Bland doesn't sound so good. Definitely a borrow rather than a buy I'm thinking. Hmm. Maybe I'll buy Ask the Passengers? Perhaps borrow first and buy later if I enjoy it.

More Trumble! Lots more Trumble, please! She is amazing! :D

It has changed so much. I have a feeling that the older LGBTQ YA novels are kind of samey? Whereas now we're getting such a broader range of stories with LGBTQ characters. It's great to see the progress! :)

  4. I have seen this topic a few times today. I haven't read any books where there the story revolves around LGBT characters. Probably should fix that. Great list I will have to check them out.
