Six for Sunday: Books that Have Been on My TBR Forever

Six for Sunday

Six For Sunday is a weekly feature run by Steph of A Little But a Lot. You can read all the Six for Sunday prompts for the rest of 2018 here. This week, we're talking about six books that have been sat on our TBR forever.

The Book of Lost Things by John Connolly
The Book of Lost Things by John Connolly (published 5th April 2007)

High in his attic bedroom, twelve-year-old David mourns the death of his mother, with only the books on his shelf for company. But those books have begun to whisper to him in the darkness. Angry and alone, he takes refuge in his imagination and soon finds that reality and fantasy have begun to meld. While his family falls apart around him, David is violently propelled into a world that is a strange reflection of his own -- populated by heroes and monsters and ruled by a faded king who keeps his secrets in a mysterious book, The Book of Lost Things.

Taking readers on a vivid journey through the loss of innocence into adulthood and beyond, New York Times bestselling author John Connolly tells a dark and compelling tale that reminds us of the enduring power of stories in our lives.

Why I want to read it: Because it sounds right up my street! How intruging does the sound of fantasy and reality "melding"? I was recommended this by a colleague who thought I would enjoy it.

Why I haven't read it yet: There are a number of small reasoms. I forget I have it a lot of the time. And it's an adult book rather than MG or YA, which makes me slightly wary. And when I do remember I have it, I fancy reading other books more than reading this one. But I really need to get to it at some point.

The Book of Blood and Shadow by Robin Wasserman
The Book of Blood and Shadow by Robin Wasserman (published 19th January 2012)

It was like a nightmare, but there was no waking up.

When the night began, Nora had two best friends and a boyfriend she adored. When it ended, she had nothing but blood on her hands. Chris was dead. Adriane couldn’t speak. And Max, Nora’s sweet, smart, soft-spoken Prince Charming, was gone. He was also—according to the police, according to her parents, according to everyone—a murderer.

Desperate to prove his innocence, Nora’s determined to follow the trail of blood, no matter where it leads. But Chris’s murder is just one piece in a puzzle that spans continents and centuries. Solving it may be the only way she can save her own life.

Why I want to read it: Did you read that cdescription?! It sounds incredible! And I'm pretty sure it involves witches.

Why I haven't read it yet: I don't know! I don't know! Why did I not start this book as soon as I got it?! How could I resist that description?! I don't know!

The Brides of Rollrock Island by Margo Lanagan
The Brides of Rollrock Island by Margo Lanagan (published 2nd Februry 2012)

Rollrock island is a lonely rock of gulls and waves, blunt fishermen and their homely wives. Life is hard for the families who must wring a poor living from the stormy seas. But Rollrock is also a place of magic - the scary, salty-real sort of magic that changes lives forever. Down on the windswept beach, where the seals lie in herds, the outcast sea witch Misskaella casts her spells - and brings forth girls from the sea - girls with long, pale limbs and faces of haunting innocence and loveliness - the most enchantingly lovely girls the fishermen of Rollrock have ever seen.

But magic always has its price. A fisherman may have and hold a sea bride, and tell himself that he is her master. But from his first look into those wide, questioning, liquid eyes, he will be just as transformed as she is. He will be equally ensnared. And in the end the witch will always have her payment.

Margo Lanagan has written an extraordinary tale of desire, despair and transformation. In devastatingly beautiful prose, she reveals unforgettable characters capable of unspeakable cruelty - and deep unspoken love. After reading about the Rollrock fishermen and their sea brides, the world will not seem the same.

Why I want to read it: Magic! A sea witch! Sea brides! Mermaids? Sirens? I don't care, this sounds incredible!

Why I haven't read it yet: So although I was intrigued by the possible sirens, the blurb on the book I have doesn't give as much info as Goodreads. It mentions the sea brides, and how they have some kind of hold over the men, but not much else. But I know a little more now, and will probably pick it up sooner.

Grave Mercy by Robin LaFevers
Grave Mercy by Robin LaFevers (published 7th June 2012)

Young, beautiful and deadly. Trained as an assassin by the god of Death, Ismae is sent to the court of Brittany, where she finds herself under prepared - not only for the games of intrigue and treason, but for the impossible choices she must make. Why I want to read it: High (historical?) fantasy! Assassins! I love these kinds of books! And I am a huge fan of intrigue!

Why I haven't read it yet: I... don't really know. I think it might be a case of "out of sight, out of mind". I have so many books, and so I have to double stack my bookcases, and I'm pretty sure this is behind some other books.

A Crown for Cold Silver by Alex Marshall
A Crown for Cold Silver by Alex Marshall (published 14th April 2015)

Five villians. One legendary general. A final quest for venegeance.

Twenty years ago, feared general Cobalt Zosia led her five villainous captains and mercenary army into battle, wrestling monsters and toppling an empire. When there were no more titles to win and no more worlds to conquer, she retired and gave up her legend to history.

Now the peace she carved for herself has been shattered by the unprovoked slaughter of her village. Seeking bloody vengeance, Zosia heads for battle once more, but to find justice she must confront grudge-bearing enemies, once-loyal allies, and an unknown army that marches under a familiar banner.

Why I want to read it: Although the description doesn't give much away, I'm really intrigued! It does sound really good. I remember wanting to read this when someone else mentioned they wanted to read it, because it's a high fantasy featuring queer characters. I believe Zosia is a lesbian, if I remember correctly?

Why I haven't read it yet: The book is huge, and heavy, and I take my books with me to work. It'll weigh my bag down so much so much, which is why I haven't read it yet. It's a book I need to read when I've got time off, really.

Ink and Bone by Rachel Caine
Ink and Bone by Rachel Caine (published 7th July 2015)

Knowledge is power. Power corrupts.

In a world where the ancient Great Library of Alexandria was never destroyed, knowledge now rules the world: freely available, but strictly controlled. Owning private books is a crime.

Why I want to read it: I am such a massive fan of Rachel Caine! Really, I loved her Morganville Vampires series! And this sounds so good! Plus, Cait of Paper Fury loves them, and she has great taste.

Why I haven't read it yet: I am very much a mood reader. Although I know I will probably love this book, I've just not been in the right mood for it. I tried reading it once, but it just wasn't grabbing me at that point. I'll definitely read it, I just need to be in the right mood.

Have you read any of these? What did you think? Or do you want to read any now I've mentioned them? And if you've taken part in Six For Sunday, link me to your posts!
