19 Eagerly Anticipated 2018 Releases

Happy New Year, everyone! It's now 2018, which means a whole year of books to look forward to. I thought I would share with you some of the books I am eagerly anticipating!

Before I Let Go by Marieke Nijkamp
2nd January 2018

Before I Let Go by Marieke Nijkamp

I absolutely loved Nijkamps' debut novel, This is Where it Ends, and her second novel sounds so good! About Corey returning to her home town to find her best friend, Kyra, is dead, and the secrets the town is keeping regarding her death and what happened. It's also a diverse novel with Corey being on the ace/aro spectrum, Kyra having feelings for Corey, and disability involved somehow.

Lucky Girl by Amanda Maciel

Lucky Girl by Amanda Maciel

This sounds great, but I'm preparing to have my heart broken. Rosie is beautiful, everyone knows it, but she wants to be more than her looks. So when a new guy moves to town who sees more than her looks. But then, at a party, something terrible happens. This book looks at sexual assault, sex-shaming, homophobia, and ideas of beauty and self-worth.

Everless by Sara Holland

Everless by Sara Holland

This sounds like such an incredible fantasy! Alchemy and sorcery have made it possible for time to be extracted from blood and bound in coins. The rich have exceptionally long lives, the poor sell their days, their months, their years. To stop her father selling the last of his time to pay rent and debts, Jules takes a job at Everless, where she discovers temptation in Roan, the Gerling heir, and secrets that could change the future of her life, and that of time. So intriguing! I am expecting some serious world building!

The Sacrifice Box by Martin Stewart
11th January 2018

The Sacrifice Box by Martin Stewart

This has been compared to Stranger Things, so - although I'm not great with horror - there's no way I can't read it! Five friends sacrifice objects that have a personal importance to them to a mysterious box they find in the woods, and swear never to return to the box at night, never to return to it alone, and never to take back what they put in it. Four years later, when the friends are no longer as close, terrifying things start happening, and they know one of them has broken the pact. Their sacrifices start to haunt them, and they discover they were not the first to sacrifice things to the box. This time, the box seems to require a bigger sacrifice; one of their lives. Doesn't that sound so exciting?!

Love, Hate and Other Filters by Samira Ahmed

Love, Hate and Other Filters by Samira Ahmed

Aah, I am so eager for this book! A #OwnVoices novel starring a Indian-American Muslim teen, Maya, torn between the life she wants and the life her parents expect her to live. But she then has bigger things to deal with after a terrorist attack and she is confronted with Islamophobia - not only as being from the only Muslim family in their town, but a family who has the same surname as the suicide bomber. I think this is going to be an upsetting, hard read, but I also think it's going to be incredible.

When My Heart Joins the Thousand by A. J. Steiger
6th February 2018

When My Heart Joins the Thousand by A. J. Steiger

A book featuring a neuroatypical girl, Alvie, and her chronically ill love interest, Stanley. The description doesn't give too much away other than that she's had a difficult past, has to take medication, and will become a ward of the state and be sent back to a group home if she has any "major mishaps" before turning 18. I don't think we have enough books with protags who are neurodiverse/neuroatypical, and this sounds like it could be a really beautiful novel! I'm really looking forward to reading it!

The Belles by Dhonielle Clayton
8th February 2018

The Belles by Dhonielle Clayton

Do I really need to say anything about The Belles? A Belle's powers can those born grey and damned beautiful in this fantasy world. Camellia want to be the Belle favoured by the Queen who works for the royal household. But there are dark secrets at the palace, and she discovers all she knows about herself - about the Belles - is a lie, and her powers could be far greater and darker than she imagined. But when the Queen asks her to break the rules to save the princess, she must choose between protecting herself and the Belles, or risking her life and changing the world. This sounds like such an incredible fantasy, and I am dying to read it! And can we talk about that cover? It's absolutely gorgeous! It's not the kind of cover you would typically see for a high fantasy novel, being so bright and beautiful, but I think the genre's covers can do with a fresh new look like this!

The Toymakers by Robert Dinsdale
8th February 2018

The Toymakers by Robert Dinsdale

About a magical toyshop that brings joy to the lives of children during the first world war. It sounds completely enchanting, and from the description, makes me think of The Night Circus  by Erin Morgenstern. It sounds like a complete wonder, and I'm so excited to read it!

I Stop Somewhere by T. E. Carter
27th February 2018

I Stop Somewhere by T. E. Carter

This book has been described as The Lovely Bones meets Asking For It, and I am so excited for it! Though I know it's going to be another incredibly difficult read. After an assault that she is not the first victim of, Ellie watches it happen again and again, while she waits to be found. But Ellie was never noticed in the first place, so who would look for someone they don't know has disappeared? I feel this may break me.

The Wicked Deep by Shea Ernshaw
8th March 2018

The Wicked Deep by Shea Ernshaw

In a town where three sisters were drowned for witchcraft two centuries ago, they return every Summer to take over the bodies of weak-hearted girls, and seek their revenge by luring boys to a death similar to their own. An unsuspecting boy, Bo, arrives, not knowing the danger he's in, mistrust spreads through the town, and people turn against each other. Penny sees what others don't, and must choose - save herself, or save Bo. I want to squeal with excitement over how bloody amazing this book sounds! This has my name written all over it!

Along the Indigo by Elsie Chapman
20th March 2018

Along the Indigo by Elsie Chapman

This sounds like a gritty thriller. About Marsden, who wants a better life for her little sister, and get out of Glory - a town of seedy enterprises where her mum is a prostitute, where people expect her to end up doing the same - and Jude, whose brother died by suicide on the Indigo River. As they get to know each other, they discover a link between Jude's brother's suicide and Mars' family, and other secrets. I'm really intrigued!

The Astonishing Colour of After by Emily X. R. Pan
22nd March 2018

The Astonishing Colour of After by Emily X. R. Pan

This sounds like a really moving story. After the death of her mother by suicide, who left a note saying "I want you to remember", and a message received by a bird, Leigh flies to Taiwan to meet her maternal grandparents. There, she deals with her grief over her mother's death, the guilt of not being at home when her mother died because she was kissing her best friend, Axel, and the feeling that she might have screwed things up there, by throwing herself into her art and her memories. It alternates between the past and the present, and I believe I read somewhere that it's magical realism. So excited for this, and that cover is gorgeous!

Out of the Blue by Sophie Cameron
22nd March 2018

Out of the Blue by Sophie Cameron

Ten days after Jaya's mum dies in a car crash, angels start falling down from the sky, smashing into the ground, dead. Hysteria mounts, and her father becomes obsessed with catching one alive, so moves them to Edinburgh. Struggling with her grief and the part she may have played, she has no interest in the angels and tries to stay out of it. But when her father's mania worsens and her best friend goes missing, an angel falls at her feet - and survives. It's then that she's forced to acknowledge just how important these angels are. I'm really intrigued, and it's a diverse novel, too; Jaya is gay, and biracial - half British Sri-Lankan and half white Scottish. Looking forward to this one.

Puddin' by Julie Murphy
8th May 2018

Puddin' by Julie Murphy

Aaah, the excitement! I absolutely loved Dumplin', so I'm super excited for the companion novel, Puddin'. However, it is only now, as I write this post, that I've realised it's a companion novel and not a sequel - Millie is it's main character, not Willowdean, which I'm a little disappointed about. Either way, I'm sure it's bound to be awesome. Millie has gone to fat camp every year, but this year she has decided to stay home and chase her dreams, and to try and kiss her secret crush. Callie has the popular boyfriend and next to be dance captain, but doesn't really do female friends. However, when the semester throws the two together, they find they have more in common than anyone would have imagined. I am excited for another hopefully heartwarming story in this series!

Girl Made of Stars by Ashley Herring Blake
15th May 2018

Girl Made of Stars by Ashley Herring Blake

This book deals with consent, victim blaming and sexual assault, when Mara's friend Hannah accuses Mara's twin brother, Owen, of rape. Torn between her family and her own beliefs in right and wrong, and with the strain between her and her ex-girlfriend, Charlie, Mara is feeling lost. All three girls must navigate the situation they find themselves in, with Mara having to face her own traumatic past, and decide what place Charlie has in her future. I think this is going to be an incredible novel, and something I've never read before. I've read from the survivor's perspective, I've read from the perspective of someone who was at the party the crime took place, and I have a book from the perspective of the rapist (though not yet read), but I've never heard of a book told from the perspective of someone who is having to question how well they know someone they love. I think this is going to be such a terribly hard read, but I believe it will also be so important.

A Thousand Perfect Notes by C.G. Drews
7th June 2018

A Thousand Perfect Notes by C.G. Drews

Aaaah! A Thousand Perfect Notes is by our very own Cait of Paper Fury! To be honest, I'm dreading it as much as I am excited for it, because what if I don't like it? How terrible to dislike a book by someone you really like! I'd feel so guilty! And also because this book is about Beck, who is abused by his violent mother, who forces him to play the piano over and over, though he will never be as good as she was before illness robbed her of her ability to play. I really struggle with books that deal with domestic violence, to the point where I just avoid them. But it doesn't feel fair to not read the debut novel of one of our own that I'm so happy for! So I'll read it. I just hope I don't break while I do so.

Bookshop Girl by Chloe Coles
14th June 2018

Bookshop Girl by Chloe Coles
And another book by someone I know! This is by my friend and work colleague, Chloe Coles! I have been very lucky to read parts of very, very early drafts, and though I'm sure things have changed quite a bit, it was absolutely hilarious, so I'm so excited to read the final version! It follows Paige, who works part time at a bookshop - her haven - that is in financial difficulty and will be torn down. But not on Paige's watch, as she tries to rally her town in to saving her beloved bookshop. At the same time she's dealing with a gorgeous, fellow artist whose interest and anarchic ways may hinder her chances to save the bookshop. This is also a pretty feminist story, so even more reasons to read. I'm so excited for this! But again, also scared!

Sea Witch by Sarah Henning
31st July 2018

The Sea Witch by Sarah Henning

Can we first talk about that gorgeous cover? Oh my god, I love it! As you probably know by now, I'm a huge fan of The Little Mermaid, and I have been waiting for this prequel retelling from the perspective of the Sea Witch for years, ever since I first heard about it (it was originally meant to be published last year, but got pushed back to this). Evie, who lives in a small fishing village, tried to save her best friend Anna from drowning with magic. She failed, but now she is an outcast and dubbed a witch. When a new girl appears with an uncanny likeness to Anna, Evie believes her magic worked, even though the girl denies she is Anna. And when the two girls steal the hearts of two princes, Evie feels she'll finally get her happy ever after, after all. But the new girl has secrets, and Evie must help her to stay in Havnestad - and on two legs. Now Evie will do all she can to save her new friend, and to keep her prince's heart, harnessing great power before realising the truth of her bargain. Oh my god, I cannot wait for this book! I am dying to read it!

Renegades by Marissa Meyer
5th April 2018

Renegades by Marissa Meyer

My main reason for being excited for Renegades is because it's by Marissa Meyer, and I've loved all her previous novels. I'm a huge fan. I'm disappointed it's not another fairy tale retelling, but we can't expect authors to stick to one kind of story type always. The Renegades are people of extraordinary power who restored peace and order to a crumbled society where chaos reigned. They are a symbol of courage and justice, except to those villains they overthrew. Nova hates the Renegades and wants revenge, but as she gets closer to getting it, she meets Adrian, a Renegade who believes in justice, and in Nova. But Nova has pledged her allegiance to a villain who could end them both. I'm normally one for super power books, but as I said, it's Marissa Meyer. I have heard that some people were disappointed, but I'll keep my fingers crossed Meyer is going to pull it out the bag again.

So those are my eagerly anticipated 2018 releases! I can think of more, but I don't want this list to go on forever. What books are you eagerly anticipating being published in 2018? Care to add to my ever growing list?

    1. Technically, I only know one of them, Chloe Coles. Cait is a blogger I am a huge fan of, and though we've had chats and stuff, I don't think I can claim to really know her. But she's awesome and I'm so excited for her that she's a debut author!

Aah, they both sounds awesome, don't they?
