I am a seriously huge fan of Richelle Mead's Vampire Academy series, huge! I loved how the series ended, but was sad it was over, and sad for some of the characters. So when I heard that there wa going to be a spin-off series, with Sydney, Rose's Alchemist friend, I was over the moon! More awesomeness from the world! And once I had the books in my hands and opened the first page... well, I didn't stop reading until it was finished. Amazing!

I lapped the book up! However, although I read it in one day, I did have to get used to the difference. This is Sydney's story, not Rose's, and she's not as strong willed and angry as Rose can be, so although there were emotional highs and lows, it was a little less to do with immediate danger, and more to do with Sydnety's dislikes of certain people, worrying that she will fail, and going out of her mind trying to follow rules yet try to keep everyone happy - despite the fact hanging out with vampires isn't her favourite pasttime. Even so there is a big difference between the characters of Rose and Sydney, and their priorities - which makes the stories different - Bloodlines was still an amazing story!

I found it really fascinating finding out more about Sydney's life, and the role of Alchemists, and all the tricks they have up their sleaves. It's just so interesting to seethe science that they're work is based on. It's quite refreshing to have science play a bigger part in a world of myths. Yes, there's is another YA vampire series where there is a scientist, but it's different with Bloodlines. This is chemistry, mixing things together to get what you need. It's just a strange but cool way of separating the moroi from the alchemists - one used magic, one uses real, physical science. I just found the contrast really interesting.

But the science isn't the main focus, that is keeping Jill safe, and to do so, she hasn't come on her own. As well as Jill, we also get Eddie and, hurrah, Adrian! There are cameo appearances of some of the other characters we know, including Rose, but Sydney, Jill, Eddie and Adrian are the main four we stick with. Jill is still a young, teenage Moroi girl, and wants to have a teenage life, but she's having enourmous trouble fitting in, is seriously underconfident, and feels that no-one relly cares about her, they just want to keep Lissa, who is now the Queen, safe - on top of trying to get used to the fact that they're related. Eddie is Jill's guardian, and is super vigilant, but still the nice guy we know from the previous series. And Adrian is his usual laid-back, snarky self, but he's also hurting a lot over wht happened with Rose. Despite this, I am so happy Adrian is back, because I absolutely love him! He just cracks me up!

Sydney isn't a guardian, so there's less fighting in this book that we're used to, but she is smart, so where it's a battle of the fists and stakes with Rose, it's a battle of the minds with Sydney, and whether she can out-smart those that need out-smarting. There is, however, a big, and quite disturbing, fight scene. Oooh, it was good! And worrying - as I said, Sydney isn't a guardian.

Now, I don't knbow if it's because I have read all the previous books and therefore know the signs, or just jknow the world enough, but two out of the three major plot revelations I guessed fairly early on. I don't know if it will be the same for other reasons, but they both just semed fairly obvious to me. That doesn't take away from how good the book is though; just because I already knew what these revelations would be, I didn't know how the characters would find out, what that would mean, and the consequences of finding them, so it was still really good watching the others figure things out. The third I had half right, I just didn't know the reasons for it. But I did shout at my book at least once saying, "Come one! It's so obvious!..." with frustration that the characters weren't as quick on the up-take as I had been. Still, as I said, it didn't make the book any less enjoyable.

In all honesty, Bloodlines isn't as heart-pumping exciting as the Vampire Academy series, but it's amazing nonetheless. It is the first book, so ground work is laid, and with a few hints throughout the novel make me believe that the book will get the whomp we've come to love. There are a fair few unanswered questions that I'm highly intrigued about! And the stirrings of possible feelings that you know are just going to cause all kinds of complications! Oh, I love it! I am just so excited to read the next novel, The Golden Lily, when it comes out next year. The wait makes me wish I hadn't read Bloodlines in one day! It will most definitely be worth the wait though! Mead has done it again, an amazingf start to what I can tell is going to be a brilliant series! I just have to get my hands on her adult series now!

I aboslutely love the Vampire Academy series, and found the Vampire Academy, the first book in the series so engrossing! So when I heard it was going to be made into a graphic novel, I was intrigued. I've never read a graphic novel before, I've always thought I'd prefer the images in my head, but as it's one of my favourite books, I thought I would give it a go.

I have to say I was quite impressed at how well the novel was adapted for the graphic novel. I'm not the fastest reader, so the novel would take me about two to three days to read. The graphic novel took me an hour to read, if that, yet still has the whole story. All the major events of the story are there, but I did miss the detail that comes with the novel - what Rose is thinking in depth, the emotion, the explainations that come with the magic. I wasn't as emotionally involved in the graphic novel as I was in the full length novel.

Although the illustrations are fantastic, I'm not the biggest fan of the manga style. And I found the facial expressions of the characters a little difficult to read, especially for those where there was no text or speech, when there was supposed to be a tense silence. I had to try and remember that part of the novel to remember what's gong on. This might just be because I'm not used to graphic novels, and something I would learn to pick up more on as I read more.

There was a certain scene in this book I was a little worried about. I'm not going to spoil it, in case there are those who have yet to read the novel, but I'm sure those who've read the book will know which I'm on about. I was intrigued but also worried about how a certain scene would be handled with illustartions - Vampire Academy is a young adult story, after all. I was actually quite impressed, yet again. It wasn't dragged out, it wasn't over the top, but it didn't hide away the fact that that scene happens. It was really good.

I don't think the graphic novel would have done it for me if I hadn't previously read the novel, I just don't think there was enough for me, but as a different way of experiencing the story, I think it worked really well. I would say I'd recommend it only if you've read the book, but I know there are those who only read graphic novels, in which case I think it's perfect for those readers. Hopefully they will enjoy it enough to pick up the full length novel.

Here's the news from over the past week.

Firstly some great news regarding the Vampire Academy spin off series by Richelle Mead. You may have heard about this already, but I hadn't, so here's the news! As Richelle says on her blog:

"Bloodlines is the spin-off series to Vampire Academy (it's the name of the first book and of the series). It's set in the VA world but will be about different characters: Sydney (our narrator), Jill, Eddie, and one of the love interests from VA. I'm not saying who that last guy is, but it's mostly to protect those who haven't read Last Sacrifice. If you have read it, then it should be pretty obvious who the other character is."

I am pretty happy with this! I liked Jill and Eddie, and the love interest that's in it... LOVE! And Sydney was pretty great too! I really can't wait until it's released, on 23rd August! And there's a countdown website for it, too!

From a press release about the Scottish protest against cuts to libraries:

Authors and illustrators from Scotland gathered at The Scottish Parliament on 5th Feb 2011 to protest against proposed cuts to the library service. Led by award-winning author, Theresa Breslin, the protest saw around 200 people gather including Gruffalo author, Julia Donaldson, on the day proclaimed National Save our Libraries Day.

Theresa Breslin, a former librarian, launched the campaign through a protest statement which, in the space of three days, gathered over 700 supporters including some of the most influential authors and illustrators living in Scotland.

Julia Donaldson, multi-award-winning author of The Gruffalo, attended the day and read out the protest statement and then delivered it to the Scottish Parliament. Theresa Breslin spoke about the importance of libraries for young people and families everywhere.

News: Regarding Buying Vampire Academy Series with Red Covers

Since I posted a few weeks back about all the new red UK covers for the whole Vampire Academy Series by Richelle Mead, I have had a few people come to me asking where they can get them. Everyone seemed to be saying the same thing; either online or in actual shops, they could only find either Frostbite or Last Sacrifice with the new covers.

I emailed my contact at Puffin about this and found out some information. It turns out that the novels with the new covers will become available once the novels with the old covers sell out, and a reprint is needed. Then the new covers will be available to buy. Last Sacrifice has only been released with this one cover, and Frostbite has been reprinted, hence the red cover. The other novels in the series are yet to need reprinting, which is why we can't find them anywhere. Apparently, it could take a couple of months before we see the new red covers on our bookshops' shelves or on online stores. It's just a case of waiting, I'm afraid. Hope this helps some of you!

Review: Last Sacrifice by Richelle Mead

Last Sacrifice by Richelle Mead (review copy) - WARNING! This is the last book in the Vampire Academy series. I cannot review this book without spoiling the others in the series, especially the previous book. Do not read any further if you haven't read this series but plan to, and do not wish it to be spoilt for you.

Rose Hathaway is awaiting wrongful execution and there exists only one man who can stall this terrible fate. Rose must look to both Dimitri and Adrian, the two great loves of her life, to find him.
With her best friend, Lissa, in a deadly struggle for the royal throne, the girls find themselves forced to rely upon enemies and questioning those they thought they could trust...

But what if true freedom means sacrificing the most important thing of all?

What can I possibly say other than WOW! I am just... completely out of words. I have no idea what I could possibly say or where I could start to make you understand just how brilliant this book is. I am just completely blown away!

As we found out in the end of the last book, Spirit Bound, Rose was framed for the muder of Queen Tatiana - who had left a note for Rose stating that Lissa's father had an illegitamate child that Rose needed to find in order to give Lissa the vote on the Council, or things were going to get worse for all in the Moroi and Dhampir society. So that left three tasks for this book; find the Queen's murderer, clear Rose's name, and finding Lissa's sibling.

As with any Vampire Academy novel, there is a fast pace with brilliant action. But there is also extreme emotion, for the characters and the readers. There are some perfect, perfect moments, and some terribly sad moments where you could just cry. Things are much more dangerous for our two girls than they have been before, and the tension is palpable. There is shock after shock as the twists unfold - you will not see these things coming. So much goes on in this novel, new things not even the characters have come across before, and it's hard to see how all of it fit into one 584 page novel. So much that I am going to refrain from going into any sort of detail, because there is just so much you should discover as you read - you're going to thank me!

We do get our answers though. We find out who killed the Queen. We find out who Rose's sibling is. We find out who lives and who dies. We find out the resolution of the love triangle. We find out where Rose and Lissa's lives will head. We find questions that aren't answered, issues that arise, and just a brilliant set up for the next spin off series, and the perfect ending to what has been an incredible series. And I absolutely cannot wait for the next series! We have no info about it yet, except for what Mead says on her website:

"Last Sacrifice will be the last book about Rose, but it'll be followed by a spin-off series still set in the Vampire Academy world. Side characters we know from the current series will now be our main characters, and there'll be a whole new storyline (not the last one told from a different perspective). So far, there is no exact release date, but you can expect it near late summer/early fall of 2011.

At the moment, I'm not allowed to reveal the title, premise, or full cast of characters. I can tell you that it'll be written in third person, so we'll get a number of characters' perspectives. One of them will be Sydney. The others are a secret for now. Also, expect a cameo from Rose. :)"
And after reading this book, I have only three words for you...
