A book that a certain friend is always telling you to read

The Raven King by Maggie Stiefvater

No-one actually tells me to read specific books, there have just been general recommendations.  Cait of Paper Fury is always recommending Maggie Stiefvater. I picked up The Raven Boys quartet specifically because she raved about them so much - even though I was nervous about doing so as I didn't like Shiver - and it wasn't bad! It's not the best series I've read, but it's enjoyable. I've still got to read The Raven King, though, and finish it off.

A book that’s been on your TBR forever and yet you still haven’t picked it up

The Book of Lost Things by John Connolly The Prince of the Mist by Carlos Ruiz Zafón Heart-Shaped Bruise by Tanya Byrne Anna Dressed in Blood by Kendare Blake Envy by Elizabeth Miles

Oh, there are so many! The Book of Lost Things by John Connolly*, The Prince of the Mist by Carlos Ruiz Zafón*, Heart-Shaped Bruise by Tanya Byrne*, Anna Dressed in Blood by Kendare Blake*, Envy by Elizabeth Miles* (the sequel to Fury*) are just a few.

A book in a series you’ve started, but haven’t gotten round to finishing yet

City of Ashes by Cassandra Clare

I read up to City of Ashes by Cassandra Clare in The Mortal Instruments series, and decided to give up. The Shadow Hunters world is just ever-growing, with so many spin-off series, and I just can't face that many books when I am so far behind. While I enjoyed the first two, I didn't enjoy them enough to continue when there are so many. And her books are everywhere. Everyone talks about them! I've kind of got to the point where anything to do with the various series or author just winds me up. Like hearing a song played so often you can't stand it any more.

A classic you’ve always liked the sound of, but never actually read

Frankenstein by Mary Shelley

Um. I'm not sure I've ever liked the sound of any classics, not in book form at least. Make them into a movie or a TV series, and I am there. But I think I'm put off by the fact that whenever we read classics at school, I always had trouble getting my head around the language, so I don't really understand what's going on. I'm no better now. But I read Monsters by Sharon Dogar earlier this year, a retelling of Mary Shelley's life, and the aspects of her own life that may have inspired Frankenstein. We read it at school, but I struggled through it. Now, because of Monsters, my interest has been renewed, so I bought a copy, plus the York Notes Frankenstein Study Guide to help me through it.

A popular book that it seems everyone but you has read

A Darker Shade of Magic by V. E. Schwab

Everyone raves about the Shades of Magic series by V. E. Schwab, and I've had A Darker Shade of Magic on my TBR for a while now. I've just yet to read it because everyone raved about the Monsters of Verity Duology, and while I enjoyed it, I have read better urban fantasies, so I'm a little nervous to go in and feel like I've read better again. But it does sounds awesome!

A book that inspired a film/TV adaptation that you really love, but you just haven’t read it yet

Les Misérables by Victor Hugo

There are quite a few. See, when you read the book first, I think we can all agree we tend to think the book is better than the movie. However, I absolutely adore The Notebook, it's my favourite movie, yet when I read the book by Nicholas Sparks, I was so very disappointed. Half the movie was missing! So I partly steer clear of books that I've already seen the movie of, because of fear of disappointment, but also because I now already know the story, and unless it's a reread, I'm generally not interested in reading the book if I know the story. But I will go with... Les Misérables by Victor Hugo! I got really interested in the book after watching the recent TV adaptation, reading some through the "Look Inside" feature on Amazon. But it's such a tome!

A book you see all over Instagram but haven’t picked up yet

I'm not on Instagram, so this will have to be for Twitter. Because of the release of the third book, The Shadow Glass, I've seen a lot of people talk about the The Bone Witch trilogy, of which I have the first, The Bone Witch. I bought it recently when it was on sale for Kindle. It sounds awesome! Will probably read it at some point this year, for the Year of the Asian Reading Challenge 2019.

I'm going to tag Cait of Paper Fury, Annie of Blossoms and Bullet Journals, Aly of Of Wonderland, Isla of A Whisper of Ink, Laura of Boats Against the Current, Kerys of The Everlasting Library, Zulfa of Lovely Owls Books, and whoever else would like to take part!

Over to you graphic

Have you read any of these books? What books have been on your TBR pile forever? Or what books have people raved about that you simply have no interest in? Let me know in the comments! And comment with your links if you take part!

  3. Somebody who hasn't read ADSoM?! ;P I do think the Shades of Magic books are better than the Monsters of Verity - I only read This Savage Song and thought it meh, and I don't even read much urban fantasy. But I have read five books by Schwab now and found all of them over-hyped so maybe it's okay if you never get to ADSoM...

As for a book everyone loves that I didn't - I recently tried to read Truthwitch, as part of my own 'can't believe I haven't read that yet' series, but couldn't get into it at all.
