My Most Anticipated 2018 Releases From July Onwards

So the first half of the year is almost over! Where has the time gone? I really don't know - I'm sure it was only January last week! But with the second half of the year comes more books! Inspired by Cait of Paper Fury's How To Be Buried Alive By Books, I'm sharing the books being published in the second half of 2018 that I'm really excited for!

Fawkes by Nadine Brandes Spinning Silver by Naoimi Novak Grace & Fury by Tracy Banghart Sea Witch by Sarah Henning

  • Fawkes by Nadine Brandes (10th July) - This is a retelling of the Gunpowder Plot, but with magic! And instead of Catholics and Protestants, it's with two different kinds of magic users. And it sounds awesome!
  • Spinning Silver by Naoimi Novak (10th July) - This is a high fantasy retelling of Rumplestiltskin, and it sounds so, so good! Really looking forward to it!
  • Grace & Fury by Tracy Banghart (26th July) - A feminist high fantasy story set in a world where women have no rights, about two sisters, one training to be a Grace, a shining example of the perfect woman who stands at the heir of the throne's side, and the other rebellious with a dangerous seceret! So excited
  • Sea Witch by Sarah Henning (31st July) - A prequel retelling origin story of The Little Mermaid from the perspective of, unsurprisingly, the Sea Witch! I have been waiting for this one for years!

Lovely, Dark, and Deep by Justina Chen After the Lights Go Out by Lili Wilkinson To Be Honest by Maggie Ann Martin Colour Me In by Lydia Ruffles

  • Lovely, Dark, and Deep by Justina Chen (31st July) - About a girl who develops an extreme case of photosensitivity, whose parents go overboard in trying to keep her safe. Sounds so intriguing!
  • After the Lights Go Out by Lili Wilkinson (1st August) - About a family who have always prepared for the end of the world, who, when the power goes out in town with no explanation, are unwilling to share when the town gets desperate after supplies run out. This sounds so thrilling!
  • To Be Honest by Maggie Ann Martin (21st August) - About an overweight girl who is dreading being stuck at home with her weight-obsessed mother - who has become even more obsessed after being on a diet show - after her older sister leaves for college. I'm hoping for body positivity, and loving your body and yourself as you are. Look at that cover!
  • Colour Me In by Lydia Ruffles (23rd August) - About a teen actor who runs to the otherside of the world when his depression kicks in after something irreparable happens. I loved Ruffles debut novel The Taste of Blue Light, so I'm really excited for this!

Toil & Trouble, ed. by Jessica Spotswood & Tess Sharpe And the Ocean Was Our Sky by Patrick Ness The Price Guide to the Occult by Leslye Walton Strange Grace by Tessa Gratton

A Blade So Black by L. L. McKinney For a Muse of Fire by Heidi Heilig The Sisters of the Winter Wood by Rena Rossner Muse of Nightmares by Laini Taylor

  • A Blade So Black by L. L. McKinney (25th September) - Alice in Wonderland meets Buffy the Vampire Slayer, with a Black protag! I'm hoping this is a little more Buffy than Alice, as I'm not really an Alice in Wonderland fan (I really dislike books that throw one obstable after another at the characters), but this does sound bloody brilliant! Hoping it's as awesome as it sounds!
  • For a Muse of Fire by Heidi Heilig (25th September) - Aaah! Heidi Heilig's next book! I don't really need to know any more, I'd read anything Heilig writes, but this does sound so good! A protag with bipolar, who uses shadow magic to bind ghosts to puppets, and an oppressed, colonised world. This is going to be woah-some!
  • The Sisters of the Winter Wood by Rena Rossner (25th September) - Fairy tales become true for these two Jewish sisters who live in the woods, and discover family members can transform into animals. When mysterious men appear, dark forces draw near. Doesn't it just sound so intriguing?!
  • Muse of Nightmares by Laini Taylor (2nd October) - Aaah, I need this book like I need air! I absolutely love Taylor's writing, and I am dying to know where things will go in this follow up to Strange the Dreamer!

Sawkill Girls by Claire Legrand Blanca & Roja by Anna-Marie McLemore Quiver by Julia Watts Odd One Out by Nic Stone

  • Sawkill Girls by Claire Legrand (2nd October) - Three girls whose lives become intwined on an island where girls have been disappearing for decades, with a legend of a monster, and insidious evil. I kind of need this right now.
  • Blanca & Roja by Anna-Marie McLemore (9th October) - Ok, so I'm still yet to read Wild Beauty, but I have adored every other book by McLemore! And this is a retelling of Snow White and Rose Red and Swan Lake, and oh my god, it sounds incredible!
  • Quiver by Julia Watts (16th October) - About the unlikely friendship between Libby from a very religious family who believe they should have as many children as possible, where the father is the patriach and the mother is the care giver, and genderfluid Zo whose family couldn't be more different from Libby's, and the clash between their families. I am so intrigued by this novel!
  • Odd One Out by Nic Stone (18th October) - A story of three friends and their complicated relationships when feelings arise between them all. This sounds like it's going to be emotional and confusing and painful, and I just really need to read it!

Broken Things by Lauren Oliver Imagine Us Happy by Jennifer Yu This Is What It Feels Like by Rebecca Barow Girls of Paper and Fire by Natasha Ngan

  • Broken Things by Lauren Oliver (18th October) - Oh my god, this sounds like such a twisty murder mystery! Five years ago, a girl was killed, and her two best friends were blamed, believing they were inspired by a novel they were obsessed with - only they didn't do it. But now a significant discovery has been made, and the the murder is brought to light again, and the lines of fiction and reality get blurred. God, I can't wait to read this!
  • Imagine Us Happy by Jennifer Yu (23rd October) - When Stella, who has depression, meets Kevin, who understands, she lets her grades and her friendships fall to the wayside. But things with Kevin start to go bad, and then worse, with arguments and major fights. As things get out of control, Stella needs to work out what she needs, and what to let go of. I am so intrigued by this story, and how it will deal with Stella's mental illness and Kevin's.
  • This Is What It Feels Like by Rebecca Barow (6th November) - This story is a little too involved to summarise quickly, but it's about past friendships, addiction, teen motherhood, and music. And it sounds so emotional. I'm so looking forward to it!
  • Girls of Paper and Fire by Natasha Ngan (6th November) - Mate. Mate! This book sounds horrifying, but awesome. It sounds like another feminist high fantasy, and so good, and I am at once excited and terrified.

The Color of Lies by C. J. Lyons Empire of Sand by Tasha Suri Any Second by Kevin Emerson

  • The Color of Lies by C. J. Lyons (6th November) - About a girl with synaesthesia who can see emotions as colours, and the one boy she can't read, who wants to know the truth about her parents' deaths - when she had always believed they died in a fire, but discovers their deaths wasn't an accident.
  • Empire of Sand by Tasha Suri (13th November) - Aah, another high fantasy that sounds incredible! The illegitamate daughter of an imperial governor with magic in her veins, from a  race persecuted for their power, and the emperor's mystics who want to use her for their own gain. Reaaaally want to read this!
  • Any Second by Kevin Emerson (20th November) - Five years ago, a boy was abducted; now he's been forced to the mall wearing a bomb. A girl with crippling anxiety manages to stop him from setting off. And now neither of their lives are the same. This sounds so good!
What books being published in the second half of the year are you looking forward to? Do any of these make your list? Have you been lucky enough to read any of these already? Let me know what you thought!

  2. Ooof, so many good books!! I'm most excited for Spinning Silver and Blanca & Roja. That last book on the list sounds heavy - I've only read Emerson's MG novel, Last Day on Mars, but I can imagine how he could ramp up the intensity for Any Second.
