A Diversified Bookcase With Lygia Day Peñaflor and All of This is True

A Diversified Bookcase

A Diversified Bookcase is a feature where authors of diverse YA recommend other diverse YA novels by other authors to their characters. Lygia Day Peñaflor, author of All of This is True, is stopping by with some recommendations for Penny and Jonah.

The characters in my new novel, All of This Is True, fall into deep trouble when they befriend Fatima Ro, the charismatic and manipulative author of their favorite novel. Today I’m pleased to recommend books to my characters, Penny and Jonah, that depict true friendships through good times and bad. Here are my recommendations for Penny, who loves fashion and is searching for non-stressful reading, and Jonah, an athlete who struggles with issues of betrayal, trust, and loyalty.

The Summer of Jordi Perez by Amy Spalding After the Shot Drops by Randy Ribay

The Summer of Jordi Perez by Amy Spalding is an adorable summer rom-com for readers who crave a fun escape. Abby is a fashion lover dedicated to her plus-size fashion blog. She scores a dream internship at a cool LA boutique but ends up falling for the other intern, photographer Jordi Perez—it’s too bad they’re competing for the same paid position! Humorous and oh, so very LA, The Summer of Jordi Perez is the perfect read if you’re looking to aww and laugh and escape your school’s boring assigned summer reading list.

After the Shot Drops by Randy Ribay features two of the fullest, most realistic characters I’ve read in a long time. Rich with honesty and basketball, alternating first-person POVs portray Nasir, who is half black and half Filipino, and Bunny, who is black. The friendship between these inner-city boys is fractured when Bunny accepts an offer to play basketball in a suburban private school. Feeling betrayed by his best friend, Nasir flounders when Bunny leaves him behind, while Bunny has difficulty fitting in at his new school. Themes of loyalty and the ability to recognize the right thing to do are sensitively addressed in Ribay’s second novel.

Thank you, Lygia, for your recommendations! I keep hearing about The Summer of Jordi Perez! It does sound awesome, so I think I'm going to have to pick up a copy. I'm not really into books that focus of sport, but I'm really intrigued by the friendship between Nasir and Bunny, and how it changes. Maybe another I'll have to look up! And All of This is True sounds absolutely incredible, and I am so excited to read it!

Miri Tan loved the book Undertow like it was a living being. So when she and her friends went to a book signing to meet the author, Fatima Ro, they concocted a plan to get close to her, even if her friends won’t admit it now. As for Jonah, well—Miri knows none of that was Fatima’s fault.

Soleil Johnston wanted to be a writer herself one day. When she and her friends started hanging out with her favorite author, Fatima Ro, she couldn’t believe their luck—especially when Jonah Nicholls started hanging out with them, too. Now, looking back, Soleil can’t believe she let Fatima manipulate her and Jonah like that. She can’t believe that she got used for a book.

Penny Panzarella was more than the materialistic party girl everyone at the Graham School thought she was. She desperately wanted Fatima Ro to see that, and she saw her chance when Fatima asked the girls to be transparent with her. If only she’d known what would happen when Fatima learned Jonah’s secret. If only she’d known that the line between fiction and truth was more complicated than any of them imagined...
