Some acquisition news from Simon and Schuster Children's Books.

First, Abbi Glines:

We have welcomed the unstoppable and brilliant Abbi Glines onto our UK list! We will be publishing her Sea Breeze series – firstly in eBook, and in paperback in 2013 (more to come on that). The good news is the first two books in the series are now available on Amazon for just £2.99, so I wanted to give you guys a heads up that S&S are now her UK publisher for these titles.

We’ll be giving them a swish new look shortly, but in the meantime, you can swoon over the original covers…

Because of Low by Abbi GlinesBECAUSE OF LOW - Buy on Amazon
Set in the steamy coastal Alabama town of Sea Breeze, an interconnected group of older teens hook up, break up . . . and much, much more.

Marcus Hardy had hoped to enjoy a year away at college while he put the summer he'd rather forget behind him. But instead, he's jerked right back his home town of Sea Breeze due to a family crisis. His dear ol' dad found himself a girlfriend only a few years older than Marcus. So now his sister needs help dealing with their mother who is falling apart. The only bright spot to returning is the fascinating red head who sleeps over at his place several times a week. There's just one thing though - she's sleeping in bed with his new roommate, Cage York.

Willow "Low" Foster needs a place to live. Running to her best friend Cage's apartment every time her sister kicks her out isn't exactly a long term solution, but juggling her courses at college and a part-time job doesn't produce excess income. But Cage has a new roommate and suddenly sleeping over at his apartment isn't such a bad thing. Not when she gets to see those sexy green eyes of Marcus's twinkle when he smiles at her like he wants her there.

There's one problem though, Cage is under the disillusion that when he's through sowing his wild oats, he's going to marry Low - an assumption Marcus intends to change. But when his carefully laid plans come crashing down with a revelation he never expected, Marcus will have to choose between Low or his family. Because once the truth comes out . . . there's no other choice.

While it Lasts by Abbi GlinesWHILE IT LASTS - Buy on Amazon
Set in the steamy coastal Alabama town of Sea Breeze, an interconnected group of older teens hook up, break up . . . and much, much more.

Cage York has a free ride to college for baseball - or he did, until he got in trouble for drink-driving. Now he has to give in to his coach's demands and spend his summer baling hay. No hot babes in bikinis waiting to meet a Southern boy to make her vacation complete. Just him and the damned cows. Oh and an uptight, snarky brunette with the biggest blue eyes he's ever seen.

Eva Brooks planned out her life step by step when she was eight years old. Not once over the years had she lost sight of her goals. Josh Beasley, her next door neighbour, had been the centre of those goals. He'd been her first boyfriend at seven, her first kiss at ten, her first date at fifteen and her first tragedy at eighteen. The moment she'd received the phone call from Josh's mother saying he'd been killed along with four other soldiers just north of Baghdad, Eva's carefully planned life imploded in the worst way possible. Now she has to deal with the arrogant Cage York and his irritating smile.

But as the summer bailing hay rolls by, Cage and Eva learn that what they want (and need) may be something they never saw coming.

Books 3 and 4, Just For Now and Breathe, will be available shortly!

Next, new eBook acquisitions:

Simon and Schuster Children’s Books announced on Friday 2nd November 2012 two new deals for young adult novels, which will first be launched as ebook exclusives this autumn.

Venetia Gosling, Editorial Director at S&S, acquired UK & Commonwealth rights in a revenge trilogy by Jenny Han and Siobhan Vivian from Lorella Belli of the Lorella Belli Literary Agency, on behalf of Folio Literary Management. The first book, entitled Burn for Burn, has just been published as an ebook (October 2012), with the print edition following in March 2013, with two further titles to follow – Fire with Fire and Ashes to Ashes.

In the second deal, Gosling acquired UK & Commonwealth rights in three historical novels by Katherine Longshore from Lizzy Kremer at David Higham Associates, on behalf of Inkwell Management. The first novel, Gilt, is based on the rise and fall of Catherine Howard, as witnessed by her best friend Kitty Tylney, and will be released as an ebook first, in November 2012, with the print version following in March 2013. The second in the series, Tarnish, is based on the story of Anne Boleyn before she met Henry, and will publish in ebook and print formats simultaneously in summer 2013. The third novel, about Mary Howard and her romance with Henry Fitzroy, follows in 2014. The books are published by Viking Penguin in the US.

News from Red House.

Red House Children's Book Award 2013

A superstar comedian, a previous winner and Lorien’s ruling elder are shortlisted for the Red House Children’s Book Award 2013 – chosen and voted for entirely by children.

The Red House Children’s Book Award as the 2013 shortlist has been announced. Among those shortlisted are funny man and bestselling children’s writer, David Walliams, previous winner and award veteran, Sophie McKenzie, Pittacus Lore, author of the popular Lorien Legacy series and 2010 nominee Suzanne La Fleur. What could be a better indicator of the books that will tempt children away from computer games and DVDs than a list drawn up by young people across the country?

Who will win? Children nationwide are now invited to vote for their favourite of the ten shortlisted books. The category winners and the author of the best children’s book published in the 2012 nomination period will be announced at a glittering awards ceremony which takes place in the Queen Elizabeth Hall at the Southbank Centre in London on Saturday 23rd February 2013.

The Red House Children’s Book Award, the only national award for children’s books that is voted for entirely by children themselves, is highly respected by teachers, parents and librarians, and has brought acclaim and strong sales to past winners such as J.K. Rowling, Patrick Ness, Michael Morpurgo, Andy Stanton, Malorie Blackman and Anthony Horowitz. The award has often been the first to recognise the future stars of children’s fiction and has the ability to turn popular authors into bestsellers.

A dedicated website www.redhousechildrensbookaward.co.uk showcases all the shortlisted titles and featured authors. Any child can vote here for their favourite book until 27th January 2012.

And... the cover of Spellcaster is GORGEOUS... and... that image! It was on the cover of... The Betrayal of Natalie Hargrove by Lauren Kate, I think?

    1. I like the Speechless cover too, though I do think I prefer the US cover. I don't know, I think the girl looks like she's smiling under the tape. And possibly too bright and cheerful for the type of story? But generally, I really like it.

Ohh, we have a different image on our cover of Betrayal of Natalie Hargrove, so will have to look it up... yes, I think it is the same image! But generally a really pretty cover! I love it!

The Lost Prince cover is really awesome, isn't it? I prefer it so much more to the covers for the Iron Fey series, which were the same as the US ones. And I much prefer our version to the US version, too. Really eye-catching!

I knooow. Lots of pretty here :)

  2. Spellcaster is so so so pretty! And I like the complete overhaul of The Lost Prince compared to US/AUS, looks awesome!

The UK cover of Speechless is definitely more eye catching with it's vibrant colours, but I think I'm still more partial to both the AUS and US ones. They're more... subtle, but still powerful?

Oooh Brodie needs more horror books in her life. So big thumbs up to Pan Macmillan's buys :D
